Design That Gets Downloaded, Used, and Given Five Stars

The difference between a 4.8-star app and a 2.9-star app is almost never the feature list — it’s how those features feel to use. Ahex designs mobile apps that earn reviews like “beautifully simple”, “works exactly how I expect”, and “finally, an app that doesn’t make me feel stupid.

Design Is the Product, Not a Layer on Top of It

Why Design Determines Everything

Most teams treat design as the last step — the part that makes the engineering output look nice before App Store submission. The teams that build the highest-rated apps treat design as the first step: the process that determines what gets built, in what order, and why.

App Store ratings are UX scores in disguise

88% of negative App Store reviews cite UX problems — confusing navigation, slow loading states, unclear error messages, checkout friction. The 1-star and 2-star reviews for even well-funded apps are almost never about missing features. They're about existing features that are too hard to find or too frustrating to use. Design is the single highest-leverage intervention for App Store rating improvement.

Every design decision is also a revenue decision

The position of a CTA button, the number of steps in a checkout flow, the way a paywall is presented, and the timing of a push notification permission request are all conversion rate decisions. A/B tested checkout redesigns routinely produce 20–40% conversion lifts. The ROI on UX investment — measured in reduced support costs, higher conversion, and better retention — averages 100:1 across the industry.

Design debt is more expensive than technical debt

When an app is built with poorly defined UX, developers make interface decisions based on what's technically easiest — which is almost never what's best for users. Retrofitting a coherent design system onto a codebase built without one is a 3–6 month redesign that could have been avoided with 6 weeks of upfront design. Design should precede development, not follow it.

Mobile App Design

Services We Deliver

From a UX audit of your struggling app to a full design system for a platform that will scale across web, iOS, and Android — every engagement produces developer-ready Figma deliverables, not PDFs of screenshots.

Foundation

UX Research & Strategy

Design without data is decoration. UX research identifies what your users actually need, what frustrates them, and what would make them refer your app to others — before a single screen is designed. Informs every subsequent design decision with evidence rather than opinion.

→ User persona development with validated goals and frustrations

→ Competitor app heuristic analysis (3–5 comparable apps)

→ User journey mapping across the primary use cases

→ Information architecture definition and card sorting

→ Usability testing plan for design validation

Core Service

Mobile App UI Design

High-fidelity visual design for every screen in your app — iOS and Android platform-native design conventions, custom icon set, typography system, colour palette with dark mode variants, and micro-interaction specifications. Design that earns "beautifully crafted" in App Store reviews rather than "looks like every other app".

→ High-fidelity Figma designs for all screens and states

→ iOS (HIG) and Android (Material You) platform variants

→ Dark mode and light mode for every screen

→ Custom icon set in SVG format

→ Micro-interaction specifications for developers

System Design

Design System Creation

A production-ready component library in Figma that becomes the single source of truth for every designer and developer on your product. Built on Atomic Design methodology with design tokens, interactive component variants, usage guidelines, and developer handoff annotations. The investment that makes every future feature 60% faster to design.

→ Full component library — atoms, molecules, organisms

→ Design tokens for colour, type, spacing, shadow, radius

→ Interactive variants — default, hover, active, disabled, error

→ Usage guidelines for every component

→ Figma Variables setup for multi-theme support

Validation

Interactive Prototyping

Click-through prototypes that feel like the real app — for stakeholder sign-off, investor demos, and user testing before a single line of code is written. Prototypes reveal interaction problems that static screens hide, saving costly UI rework mid-development. Advanced Figma prototyping with realistic transitions, conditional logic, and device-frame previews.

→ High-fidelity Figma prototype for all primary user flows

→ Realistic transitions and animation curves specified

→ Usability testing sessions with 5–8 target users

→ Test findings report with prioritised design changes

→ Shareable prototype link for remote stakeholder review

Diagnosis

UX Audit & Redesign

A structured review of your existing app against usability heuristics, App Store review sentiment, and conversion analytics — identifying exactly why users are frustrated and what to prioritise in a redesign. Every redesign recommendation is anchored to a specific identified problem, not aesthetic preference. Redesigns that recover 1-star apps to 4.5-star ratings within two releases.

→ Heuristic evaluation against Nielsen's 10 principles

→ App Store review sentiment analysis for UX signals

→ Severity-ranked issue list with before/after comparison

→ Conversion funnel analysis with drop-off identification

→ Prioritised redesign roadmap with effort vs impact matrix

Handoff

Design-to-Development Handoff

The gap between "design approved" and "built correctly" is where good design dies. Ahex handoff includes Figma Dev Mode setup with auto-generated code snippets, spacing and layout annotations, asset export specifications, motion design documentation using Lottie where applicable, and a 2-week developer support window where designers respond to implementation questions.

→ Figma Dev Mode configured with component documentation

→ Asset export specs — icons in SVG, images in WebP/PNG sets

→ Motion spec document with easing curves and durations

→ Lottie JSON files for complex animations

→ 2-week implementation support window with designers

Design Systems

The Investment That Makes Every Future Feature Faster

A design system is the single most valuable design investment for any product building beyond its first release. It's the difference between a product that looks increasingly inconsistent as features are added, and one that feels intentionally designed regardless of how many people contributed to it.

60% faster feature design after the system is in place

Designers stop rebuilding buttons and forms from scratch. They assemble new screens from the component library in hours, not days — spending creative energy on the new design problems, not repeating solved ones.

Pixel-perfect implementation — every time

Developers reference the design system's Figma components and tokens instead of eyeballing spacing and colours. Figma Dev Mode auto-generates code snippets. The result is implementation that matches the design — consistently, across the entire team, on every release.

Dark mode, right-to-left, and multi-theme from day one

A design system built with Figma Variables supports dark mode, brand themes, and RTL layouts through token-level switching — not manual duplication of every screen in every variant. Add a new market or brand theme in days, not weeks.

Accessibility baked into every component

Contrast ratios, minimum touch target sizes, focus states, and screen reader labels are defined at the component level — so every screen that uses the design system inherits WCAG 2.1 AA compliance automatically. Accessibility is not a retrofit; it's a component property.

Design Principles

What Our Design Team, Gets Right Every Time

The six principles that distinguish design that earns 5-star reviews from design that just passes approval in the stakeholder meeting.

Mobile-Native

Designed for a Phone, Not Ported from a Website

Mobile design is not responsive web design. Thumb zones, swipe gestures, bottom sheets, haptic feedback, safe areas, and one-handed navigation are mobile-specific design constraints that don't exist on desktop. We design for the phone first — which means radically different information hierarchies, interaction patterns, and component sizes than their desktop equivalents.

Touch targets minimum 44×44pt — thumbs are less precise than cursors

Bottom-of-screen primary actions — not top-right corner buttons

Gesture-first interactions — swipe to delete, pull to refresh, pinch to zoom

Platform conventions respected — HIG for iOS, Material You for Android

Clarity

The Best Interface Is the One That Disappears

Users don't want to use an interface — they want to accomplish something. The job of design is to make the interface invisible by making the next action always obvious. Visual hierarchy, whitespace, and information density are the tools. The measure of success is whether users complete their goal without noticing the design — only its outcome.

One primary action per screen — not six equally weighted options

Empty states as design opportunities — guide, don’t abandon

Error messages that explain what to do — not just what went wrong

Progressive disclosure — show complexity only when needed

Performance Design

Design That Feels Fast Even When It Isn't

Perceived performance is a design problem, not just an engineering one. Skeleton screens, optimistic UI updates, content-loading prioritisation, and transition animations that mask network latency make apps feel faster without changing any backend code. We design every loading state, every transition, and every empty state with performance perception in mind

Skeleton screens instead of spinners — shape and context while loading

Optimistic UI — show the result before the server confirms it

Meaningful transitions — motion that communicates spatial context

Offline states designed — app behaviour without connectivity

Accessibility

Designed for Everyone — Including Your Future Self

WCAG 2.1 AA compliance is not just a checkbox — it's a design quality signal. Apps that pass accessibility testing have better colour contrast, clearer typography, larger touch targets, and more explicit UI states than apps designed without accessibility in mind. Every Ahex design is tested with Stark for contrast, checked for 44pt touch targets, and annotated with semantic labels for screen reader support.

WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratio — verified with Stark plugin in Figma

Screen reader labels annotated for every interactive element

Dynamic type support — UI tested at smallest and largest text size

Focus state design — keyboard navigation path defined

Evidence-Based

Tested with Real Users, Not Approved by Stakeholders

Stakeholder approval is not user validation. The people in the approval meeting know the product too well — they don't represent new users encountering the app for the first time. We test with 5–8 target users at the wireframe stage and at the high-fidelity prototype stage. Problems found in testing cost 10–100× less to fix than problems found post-launch.

Moderated usability sessions at wireframe stage

Unmoderated testing at high-fidelity prototype stage via Maze

Task completion rate and time-on-task as primary success metrics

Post-launch: Hotjar behaviour analytics to validate design assumptions

Dev-Ready

Design That Developers Can Build Without Daily Clarification

A beautiful Figma file that developers have to guess at implementing is a failed handoff. Ahex design deliverables include explicit spacing values, all interactive states defined (not just the happy path), motion specifications with easing curves and durations, and a 2-week developer support window where the design team answers implementation questions directly — not through a project manager.

All states defined — default, hover, pressed, disabled, error, loading

Figma Dev Mode with auto-generated CSS and component properties

Motion specs: duration, easing curve, delay for every animation

Edge case screens — empty state, error state, permission denied
