Odoo 20 Inventory Management

While managing your warehouse operations, you probably faced this situation. Your inventory system software says 12 units, but the stock shelf only has 9 units. And the customer order is already promised. The gap is 3 units, and it will ruin the order.

Now imagine this gap scaled across millions of SKUs. How many orders will get affected, and how large the losses would be?

According to the IHL Group report, out-of-stocks and overstocks cost the global retail industry $1.73 trillion a year. That makes it about 6.5% of global retail sales.

If your inventory is a mess, then you must know about Odoo 20 Inventory Management, which can help you fix this as well as other small frictions that affect your overall inventory management efficiency.

In this blog, we will explore the new features of Odoo 20 Inventory and how you can use them to streamline your inventory operations. You will also learn what to check before upgrading to Odoo 20.

1. Smarter Stock Replenishment

Every warehouse has reordering rules. These are set at go-live and never touched again. Minimums that made sense two years ago now cause stockouts or tie up cash in overstock.

Odoo 20 gives reordering rules suggested minimum and maximum levels. These are calculated from data like the demand history, the number of days of coverage, and how often you receive orders.

In Odoo 20 Inventory Management, planners no longer start from a blank field. They start from a data-backed number and adjust it.

Ministock management is also new in this release. It provides basic stock visibility without the complexity of a full warehouse management system.

Businesses can monitor on-hand quantities, expected incoming and outgoing stock, forecasted availability, and approximate inventory value. One of the ideal features for businesses that have simple inventory needs.

    2. Better Visibility: Allocation, Aging, Traceability and Valuation

Odoo 20 Inventory adds reports that used to mean exporting to a spreadsheet.

      • Allocation reports are improved, which helps when several orders compete for the same stock.
      • There’s now a stock aging report, and you can see stock levels at any past timestamp.
      • With traceability, you can view upstream and downstream of lots and serials in one view. It can be very helpful during an audit or recall.
      • Valuation also gets clearer in the awkward cases where goods and invoices don’t move together. The goods are delivered but not invoiced, invoiced but not delivered, or received with the vendor bill still pending.

3.Shipping and Paperwork: CMR, Labels and ShipStation

If you move goods by road across borders, you may already know the CMR consignment note.

In Odoo 20 Inventory Management, you can download a CMR straight from a delivery, prefilled from the transfer.

That is one less document typed by hand and one less chance of a mismatch between the system and the paperwork.

With Fleet and Barcode installed, a bridge module lets you print it from the Barcode app too. The release also brings a new label design.

The bigger shipping change is a native ShipStation connector. ShipStation is added as a provider on the delivery method form, and labels bought through it attach to the transfer.

        4. The Warehouse Floor: Barcode, RFID and Fewer Taps

Odoo 20 warehouse operations are powered by Barcode and RFID.

          • RFID

The Barcode app now reads RFID readers that send hexadecimal values.

One pass over a pallet can return dozens of tags at once, so a new RFID Timer setting holds that burst for a set number of milliseconds and processes it as a single batch.

The screen doesn’t redraw for every tag. It is a developer-mode setting, so partner with an Odoo implementation company to tune it for your hardware.

          • Serial Numbers from the Handheld

Receiving five serial-tracked units used to mean five scans or five typed numbers. “Now, the receipt line can generate serial numbers for you.

It can help create a single number, as well as a number for every remaining unit, and the operator can still edit or remove any of them before validating.

When you receive shipments that have serial labels, you can scan those so the numbers on the box match the numbers in Odoo ERP.

          • Instructions Preview

Each operation type gets a Barcode App tab showing the exact scan steps an operator will see, updating live as you change the mandatory-scan and option settings.

You can see what “force a product scan” does to the flow before you push it to the floor.

          • Scan a Contact

Scan a contact’s barcode from the Barcode main menu, and you get their pending transfers. At a will-call counter or a supplier dock, one scan of a driver’s badge shows everything waiting for them.

There are also two additions. The offline mode lets supported users browse, search, create, and edit records without a connection, then syncs when it returns, which helps in dead zones at the back of a large building.

Another one is OBox, which gives printers, scanners, scales, and other hardware a more centralized way to connect to Odoo.

          5. Multi-Company and Inter-Branch Flows

Multiple stores with a central warehouse get the most structural improvements with Odoo 20.

            • Intercompany Flows

One company can replenish its stock from another company’s warehouse, with valuation transferred correctly. Inter-branch flows are improved as well.

            • Per-Company Lead Times

In a multi-company setup, the same product can now carry a different delivery lead time for each company.

            • Routing

Push routes can now be based on the destination location. You don’t need to plan around routing by product category, because that isn’t how it works.

            • Product Data

HS codes and packaging can be set per product variant, which matters for customs and for products sold in different pack sizes.

Benefits of Using Odoo 20 Inventory Management

Below are the benefits of using Odoo 20 Inventory Management to manage stock and streamline business inventory operations.

            1. Reduced Stockouts and Overstock

With Odoo 20 inventory management, businesses can use features like the suggested min/max levels to replace guesswork with numbers built from their own demand history.

The result is less cash tied up in slow stock and fewer emergency orders for fast stock.

                2. Faster and More Accurate Receiving

Another advantage of Odoo 20’s new features is that you can automate the process of receiving goods.

You can generate serial numbers from the handheld, plus RFID batch reading, which takes the repetitive typing and scanning out of the dock.

Less manual entry means fewer typos, and fewer typos mean fewer stock discrepancies to chase later.

                  3. Simpler Shipping and Compliance

There is a CMR prefilled from the delivery, which means the paperwork matches the transfer, so there’s no retyping at the dispatch desk.

For merchants shipping through ShipStation, labels land directly on the transfer, and the custom bridge that used to need maintenance at every upgrade disappears.

                    4. Better Lot and Serial Traceability

By using the Odoo 20 inventory management software, you can access reports that show upstream and downstream lots and serials in one view.

Instead of piecing together a recall from several screens, you can see which customers received what. Stock aging and point-in-time stock history streamline audits.

                      5. Improved Control over Inventories

For groups with several companies or branches, intercompany resupply with correct valuation, per-company lead times, and per-variant customs codes means fewer spreadsheets sitting between entities.

Ministock helps on the other end of the scale. Businesses with simple needs get basic stock visibility without taking on a full warehouse setup.

                        6. Works Even with Limited Connectivity

The Odoo 20 inventory management can also work in areas where there is less or no internet. You can switch on the offline mode and keep working.

When connectivity returns, all the data will sync automatically. It is very beneficial for large warehouses that have patchy Wi-Fi.

Practical Considerations for Upgrading to Odoo 20

Odoo 20 is a new release, and most of the changes in the Inventory module are additions, so the upgrade itself isn’t complex.

However, the risk sits underneath. Here is what to check before you start upgrading to Odoo 20.

                          1. The Urgency to Upgrade

You might be thinking, “Should I upgrade now or wait?”. Well, it depends on the Odoo version you are currently using and whether your business really needs the upgrade or not.

                            If you are using

                            • Odoo 19: No rush. Plan the upgrade when a specific feature gives you a concrete benefit.
                            • Odoo 17 or 18: Plan the upgrade within 6 months to a year. Odoo supports only the last three major versions.
                            • Odoo 16 or older: Treat it as a project, not an update. Use it to review which custom modules you still need, since Odoo 20 now covers some of them as standard.

                            2. Check Custom Modules and Integrations First

The biggest upgrade cost usually comes from custom code. Several framework-level changes affect almost any module that writes data:

                              • Record rules have been replaced by a domain set directly on the access right.
                              • The tracking-values mechanism behind the Chatter has been rebuilt, which affects reports that read field change history.
                              • Font Awesome icons have been replaced by Material Symbols, which affects modules with their own interface.

So, list every custom module and test each one against this list before you plan the cut-over.

                              3. Review Your Warehouse Integrations

Warehouses tend to depend on external systems, and those need extra attention. Odoo has scheduled the removal of its XML-RPC and JSON-RPC endpoints for Odoo 20, so anything that talks to your database through them needs checking.

That includes RFID readers, label printers, shipping connectors, and third-party warehouse tools.

If you use a custom ShipStation bridge, compare what it does today, such as labels, tracking, rates and returns, against the new standard module before deciding to replace it.

                                4. Re-Test Inventory Workflows End to End

Test whole processes, not individual features.

                                  • Receiving, putaway, picking, packing and delivery on a staging copy of your real data.
                                  • Inventory valuation and accounting entries, including goods delivered but not invoiced and received but not yet billed.
                                  • Barcode flows on your actual handheld devices, plus RFID readers if you use them.
                                  • Offline Mode, if your teams work in areas with weak connectivity.
                                  • Intercompany and multi-branch transfers, if you operate several entities.

                                  Conclusion

Odoo 20 doesn’t reinvent Inventory Management; however, it adds new feature upgrades that you must know.

In Odoo 20, you get suggested reorder levels, RFID and serial generation on the handheld, CMR documents, better traceability, and stronger multi-company flows.

All of these target the same problem: the gap between what the system says and what is on the shelf.

For most teams, the upgrade is manageable if you audit custom modules, test integrations, and retrain your floor staff first.

                                  Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main new features in Odoo 20 Inventory?

The new features in Odoo 20 Inventory are suggested min/max reorder levels, Ministock, improved allocation reports, CMR documents, a ShipStation connector, and RFID support in the Barcode app. The current ones, like stock aging, traceability, and multi-company flows, also get improvements.

How can Odoo 20 streamline inventory management?

Odoo 20 automates manual work and reduces guesswork. It lets you maintain the ideal stock for a period to avoid overstocking or understocking. Also, some of the features help in streamlining the scanning and documentation processes. It also provides better traceability of goods via reports.

Is upgrading from Odoo 19 to Odoo 20 difficult?

It depends on how many custom modules and integrations you have. Changes to access rights, change tracking, and the chart of accounts can affect custom code, so test everything on a staging copy before going live.

Which Odoo 20 AI features can I use to manage inventory?

You can use Odoo 20 AI agents to create and update records and run inside automations. There is also the native MCP server, which lets external AI assistants query your stock data under existing access rights.

Will my current operations get affected while upgrading to Odoo 20?

At Ahex Technologies, our Odoo experts upgrade the ERP in stages. We run the upgrade and test it on a copy of your database, so your live systems keep working during that time. For the final switch-over, we schedule it after working hours so that your business is not affected.
